Great British Escapes

Lake District Great British EscapesIt’s perhaps best known for its historical cities and cultural attractions, but for such as small nation Britain also has immensely varied countryside. From the icy peaks of Scotland’s Grampions to the rolling chocolate-box fields of the Cotswolds and the chalk cliffs of the Sussex Downs, there’s something to appeal to everyone.

1. The Jurassic Coast: One of the most fascinating British destinations is the Dorset coastline, which is known as the ‘Jurassic Coast’ thanks to its ancient rock formations and abundance of fossils. It’s not just geology buffs that will love it here either – the sandy beaches are perfect for surfing, swimming and watersports and there are plenty of typically English villages scattered along the coast where you can enjoy a cream tea and perhaps watch a game of local cricket. Dorset can be expensive during the holiday season, so the best option is to hire a caravan in a resort such as Park Resorts, which has a location near the stunning town of Lyme Regis. If you really fall in love with Dorset then Park resorts offers static caravan sales starting at under £20k.

2. Lake District: Arguably the country’s most beautiful national park, the Lake District is a spectacular collection of mountains, secluded lakes and rolling, sheep-grazed fells. In between the fells you’ll find small but lively villages such as Borrowdale, Keswick and Ambleside, which are well geared to the needs of tourists. One of the area’s attractions is the dearth of large hotel chains, so if you’re looking for accommodation then opt for guest houses, bed and breakfasts or one of the independent hotels located in remote stately homes around the region. Popular activities include hiking, climbing, kayaking, scrambling, and other adventure sports – but it’s equally possible to find yourself a country pub and enjoy the scenery with a glass of something cold in your hand.

3. The South Downs: Britain’s most recent national park might be small, but it certainly packs plenty of beautiful scenery into a limited area. The Downs run roughly parallel to the Sussex coastline, at points abutting the sea to form famous white chalk cliffs such as the Seven Sisters and Beachy Head. The area is easily accessible from London – just an hour’s train journey – and is a gastronomic haven with a range of foodie pubs and good restaurants. You should also take the time to explore some of the towns and villages, such as Lewes with its ancient Pagan connections and Alfriston which was a regular stamping ground of the Bloomsbury set.

Planning a Family Get-Away on a Budget

ETUK PIC Planning a Family Get Away on a BudgetIt's easy to travel when you are single because time and money are easier to manage. But when you start to have a family of your own, plans for any travel goes down the budget list and even totally eliminated it. Though with combined income, couples will somehow save some of the expenses by paying it shared. But with the increasing household budget, cost of child care, car and housing, savings for emergencies and retirement, family’s health and accident insurance, most married couples with children opt to forget their dream travel. They try to content themselves with the present and hope that they will be able to travel once they retire. Here are some tips on how you can achieve the travel that you've always dreamed of:

First, you have to plan for your travel and save money for it. It is important that before going to a certain destination you do some research about the place and identify the coolest cities you can visit and what activities you plan to do there. From this, you will be able to set your budget and play around with it. It is important to recognize where you want to grasp the budget for this travel. This may be from cutting off on some expensive coffee, eating on classy restaurants and switching to recreation activities that are mostly free but enjoyable for the family. Rearranging your expenses helps in obtaining some extra cash for the planned travel with the family. Also, try to examine your daily expenses by listing it every day, you will be amazed at how much unnecessary things you buy on a habit or on an impulse which will add up to significant amounts.

Second, check the internet often and see if there are an air fares on sale and tour packages on non-peak season. Many budget airlines are now emerging breaking the once so high prices of travelling abroad on air fare alone. And with many people wanting to travel on a budget, merchants have also catered them through putting up cheap hotels, backpacker's Inn and student hostels which are way cheaper than regular hotels especially during off-peak period. Try to book ahead on these budget airlines and hotels to save significantly on your travel. Search for travel websites or the deal-of-the-day websites that offer travels on huge discounts. There are a lot of deal-of-the-day websites coming out of the web nowadays, and you can save a lot if you know where to search. These deals from tour packages to car rentals and hotel accommodations are at nose dive prices. Other sites to check are travel websites which will help you find the best deals on air fare whether national or international travels. These sites will search the whole internet for all sorts of airlines
including those you haven't heard about and even suggest the dates for best rates.
This is really awesome especially if you're time is flexible. Some may offer last-minute bargains at super low rates but this does not mean that early travel planners will not be able to save as they can still book in advance at low peak seasons.

These are just some of the ways for families to be able to travel despite the economic difficulties we experience today. With the daily battle we face, seeing and experiencing the world through travel is really a refreshing detour which will create memories that we will always remember on our sunset days.

Things to do in London – The Houses of Parliament

Houses of Parliament ETUK1 300x195 Things to do in London – The Houses of ParliamentThinking of what to do in London? There can be a lot of things to see and  do in London. And one of the top attractions to visit is the Houses of Parliament.

The Houses of Parliament, also known as the Westminster Palace is one of the top places to visit in London. This is located at the north bank of River Thames at the heart of London in the city of Westminster. Close to it is the historic Westminster Abbey, the government buildings in Whitehall and the Downing Street where the official residences of British Ministers are located. This is where the two houses of the UK Parliament – the House of Lords and the House of Commons meet.

Standing today is the New Westminster Palace as the old one was destroyed by fire in 1834. Remaining important structures are the Jewel Tower, Westminster Hall, the Cloisters of St Stephen's, and the Chapel of St Mary Undercroft. The new building was designed by Sir Charles Barry and his assistant Augustus Welby Pugin in neo gothic style. A large complex was created and the surviving structures from the fire were incorporated. The new complex includes the Clock Tower, Victoria Tower, House of Commons, House of Lords, Westminster Hall and the Lobbies.

Westminster Hall is the oldest part of the Houses of Parliament, which dates back to 1097. The hall, which is a striking building and is one of Europe's largest unsupported medieval halls, is officially a royal palace. The most famous on the other hand, is the elegant clock tower, which was originally called St. Stephen’s Tower and was subsequently called the Big Ben named after the tower’s largest bell. Opposite the Big Ben is the 98m tall Victoria Tower, built in 1860. Since 1497, this tower keeps the records of both the House of Lords and the House of Commons. And this is where the Union Flag is raised during the parliamentary year.

The Parliament building is open to the public in a variety of programs and events. Visitors can have access to both the Commons and Lords chambers and historic Westminster Hall through guided tours, which is available on a regular basis. They can also attend debates in both Houses and watch committee hearings.

Access to this building however depends on your status. If you are a UK resident, you can attend debates, watch committees, take a tour of Parliament and climb the Clock Tower. Overseas visitors on the other hand, can watch laws being made, attend debates and watch committees when Parliament is in session. They can also visit the Archives on Mondays to Fridays and tour Parliament on Saturdays and during Summer Opening but are not allowed to climb the Clock Tower.

Nearby is the Jewel Tower, which can also be visited by guests as this contains an exhibition called "Parliament Past and Present". This tower was built around 1365 and is one of the only two surviving sections of the medieval royal Palace of Westminster.

Overall, a tour to this landmark is a must when you visit Britain or London in particular. This is one of the Top 10 destinations in London, a place you should never miss in your travel to UK.

Travel to UK Featured Attraction – The Tower Bridge in London

If you are planning your travel to UK the Tower Bridge is one of the must-see structures in London and also one of the most famous bridges in the world. It is recognizable by its two towers in Victorian Gothic design that was said to be a product of a law which prompted the designers to come up with a style that will also match with the London Tower which is just close to it and from which its name was taken.

This structure was built due to London’s traffic problem in the 1860s which made crossing the Thames River difficult as there are thousands of people, horses and carts pass across London everyday. It’s design was to consider easing this traffic while at the same time allow ships navigating the Thames River to pass through underneath the bridge as the river was one of the busiest shipping channels in the world at that time. In 1876 a committee was formed to find a solution to this river crossing problem. There was a public competition for the design of the bridge but none of the designs were chosen. Until in 1884, the City Architect Horace Jones passed a design in a combined bascule and suspension bridge which solved the problem. The bridge opened in 1894 which was declared by the Prince and Princess of Wales.

At present, the Tower Bridge is not as busy as before when this used to open in as much as 50 times a day compared to only about 1,000 times a year currently. The bridge lifts are now pre-scheduled for cruise ships and others. So if you’re planning to travel to UK and go to London and see the Tower Bridge, you can check the bridge’s website for the lifting schedule.

With the passage of time, the tower Bridge became an iconic symbol of London. And thus, tourists never miss to visit this place while on travel to UK in London to take pictures or may be experience the bridge by going inside where they can awe at the magnificent view of London from the walkway between the two towers.
